Myles

What I had seen on the news last night left me horrified. I had just been reading the report about the plane accident we'd had, when the alerts had come through my phone. Gone had been the fury that something as small as a rusted nut would have led to our deaths, replaced by confusion.

I’d spent the night tossing and turning after trying to call Leigh and getting her voice mail. There was no way the woman I was coming to love, the mother of my unborn child, would have sold anything on the black market. She was too innocent, and she was honest to a fault. This had to be her ex’s doing, and it made me sick thinking about what this must be doing to her if she’d heard the news yet.

I’d been footing calls all morning from the board, insisting that I would talk to her and that we wouldn’t act until I knew what was going on. Whatever was going on, I’d already realized I’d have to ask her to take a leave just until this could be sorted out. She was too high up in the company to have her working in the office with this sort of allegation floating around.

Besides, she’d need her time and energy to focus on bringing a defamation lawsuit against the fools who’d put this out because there was no way she’d done this, and I couldn’t believe they’d been foolish enough to put such a story out without evidence on some company executive’s say-so.

When I spotted her walking to her office next to mine, her shoulders slumped, bags under her eyes, and none of her usual morning enthusiasm, I didn’t know if it was because she was feeling sick again or because she’d seen the news story and was feeling scared and defeated. Either way, I needed to reassure myself she was doing okay, so I headed over and knocked on the door as she was setting down her purse.

She looked up, and a brief flash of fear crossed her face before she smoothed it away and smiled at me. The smile was dimmer than usual, and between the two, it was clear she’d seen the news. “Myles, is something wrong?”

I stepped in and shut the door behind me. “Clearly something is. I take it you’ve seen the news.”

Raw pain bubbled to the surface, and she looked ready to cry or bolt. “Then you did see it.”

“I did.”

She dropped down into her seat and buried her face in her hands. “I’ll understand if you have to fire me.”

I tensed. Fire her for a lie? Unless there was something to it… “Leigh… Tell me there’s nothing to what they’re saying? I didn’t believe it, but you’re starting to worry me.”

“There isn’t anything to it.” She lifted her head, tears sliding down her cheeks. “It’s just that there’s no evidence that I didn’t that I have in hand to present.”

“Surely there’s some evidence, though? You didn’t do it, so the trail of evidence wouldn’t lead to you.
